What the cannabinoids CBDA and CBGA are and why smoking cannabis won’t prevent Covid

Yesterday, several people contacted me to ask me if I had seen the groundbreaking study saying certain cannabinoids block Covid-19 infection.

Of course, the cannabis community rejoices, we already know the healing benefits of the cannabis plant. However, this is just more proof that cannabis is actually a useful plant, and not the demon that the wars on drugs have made it.

However, we also need to consider what the study results mean. This means that smoking cannabis or taking your daily food will not prevent you from getting covid. The cannabinoids they refer to are the acids found in raw cannabis.

Understanding CBDA and CBGA

Cannabinoids CBGA and CBDA are acids found in raw cannabis. Cannabinoids start out as acids, then upon heating (a process called decarboxylation or decarburization) they convert to their neutral state – so CBDA when heated becomes CBD. Raw cannabis is non-psychoactive and safe, even for children.

There are over 100 cannabinoids found in the plant, the two most abundant being THC and CBD. CBG is the precursor to all cannabinoids, CBG is non-intoxicating and helps regulate appetite, sleep and reduce pain. You can buy CBG products in Canada (not yet in British Columbia).

In the United States, they have legalized hemp, so they have several hemp growers growing hemp and selling the extracts. Hemp is cannabis grown to contain less than 0.03% THC. Hemp is high in CBD, so many growers will sell CBDA extracts, but this is not available in Canada so far.

Why you can’t find CBDA and CBGA in Canada

The Canadian government regulates hemp under cannabis law, which is why you can only buy CBD in cannabis stores, behind the lock and key. That’s why you get warning labels on your CBD bath bomb. That’s why we don’t have artisanal hemp or CBDA or CBGA extracts.

Some US companies ship their products to Canada, but it’s not legal to do so, so it can be hard to find.

Although we may not get these extracts just yet, I have a feeling that after this extensive study, we will likely see more of these extracts on the market in the future.

Raw cannabis and its health benefits

A few years ago I started growing cannabis plants outdoors. I was unable to grow cannabis that I could use in my vaporizer or edibles, but I was able to eat the leaves of the plant.

Eating raw leaves in a smoothie, for example, can give you a small amount of these cannabinoids, but you should know that the strain you’re eating is high in CBD and CBG. CBG is usually found in less than 1% in most strains, but some strains are higher in CBG.

Eating Raw Cannabis Is Packed With Nutrients and it’s something I highly recommend, if you are capable of growing your own cannabis plants. Subscribe to Weed Mama (at the end of this article) because in the future I will publish recipes with raw cannabis.

“Raw cannabis leaves and flowers could be considered one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. The raw plant material contains essential fatty acids, nine essential amino acids, dietary fiber, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, flavonoids, carotenoids, terpenes and phytocannabinoid acids, all of which have the potential to benefit health.

The future of cannabis is bright

This study may not mean that all of us cannabis users are suddenly immune to Covid-19, but it does give us a better insight into the benefits of this plant’s properties. I look forward to more studies on what this wonderful plant can do as science reveals more about the plant and how it can benefit our health.
