Get ready for drainage

After putting on the necessary safety equipment, you:

  • Take one of the two 5 gallon buckets and measure 8cm from the bottom
  • Draw a horizontal line using your permanent marker
  • Cut the bottom part of the bucket with your rotary tool.

You now have the top half of your bucket space for lights and the bottom half as a drip tray.

  • With your second 5 gallon bucket, drill 12 evenly spaced holes in the bottom. Remove the handle if there is one.
  • Place the other bucket on top to cover. This bucket becomes the “lid” that connects the buckets.

Now the fun part. First, drill a hole in each quarter of the bottom bucket just below its edge to connect your top and bottom bucket. Then insert the bolts into the holes and secure them with the nuts and washers.

Place the top bucket over your bottom bucket and mark where the bolts sit.

Then draw an upside down “L” shape measuring up to 4cm and across another 4cm. Once you have the upside down L shape, cut a wide channel with your rotary tool. You now have a simple twist lock for your space bucket.

Add fans and lightning

Install processor fans for ventilation by measuring the fan housing and drawing the openings. Cut the exact shape on your bottom bucket so it will fit properly.

You now have a cutout for your intake fan. You need to make the same cutout for the second CPU fan (the exhaust fan) on the top bucket.

After installing the ventilation system, install the lights. You will need 4 CFL bulbs or LED strip lights. Line them up inside the bottom lid of your bucket. If you are using CFL bulbs, you must drill four additional holes on the cover for the electrical components. You should also cut a fan hole on the lid for good air circulation.

Seal properly

To seal your space bucket, use tape and rope. Place it between the rim of the lower bucket and the bolts. Be sure to check whether the gasket fits or not. If so, keep adding layers of tape until it fills the gap between the two buckets so that light from outside doesn’t seep into your space bucket.

At this point you should also line the inside of your space bucket with Mylar film. Spray the inside with the spray glue and stick your Mylar film. Once everything is sealed, use your razor or Exacto knife to reopen the CPU fan cutouts.

Install and test fans

When installing the electricity in your space bucket, be aware that your intake and exhaust fan depends on which direction the grilles face. For this reason, you need to make sure your intake fan has its grills facing the inside of the bucket while the exhaust fan has its grills facing out.

Don’t worry about the gaps., Use the sealing tube to fill the gaps created by the cutouts where you installed your CPU fan case. Once everything is installed, check if everything is working. Plug the fans into the power strip and the lights into the timer.

CFL bulbs are not ideal since you work in such a restricted space, and there is a real chance of burn your plant. And even with ample space, CFL bulbs aren’t exactly cost effective either, and they wear out pretty quickly.

For a more economical alternative to the reflective walls of your space bucket, try Panda Film. Although not as reflective as Mylar, it does the job at a much more affordable price. Plus, it’s not as flimsy as the diamond pattern of Mylar, so lining the inside of your space bucket won’t look like you’re doing surgery.
