Reducing Harmful Aspects of Cannabis

While smoking weed is generally a lot of fun, there are a few negative side effects that show up if you smoke a lot. I guess it’s not all physical issues, and there are a few other things to consider if you smoke. Harm reduction with any drug is important, but it can be easy to fall into negative patterns and spaces when you smoke heavily. We’ve already looked at how cannabis addiction works, but we can also find ways to reduce issues like smoker’s cough, anxiety, getting high, lack of motivation, health issues. mental and all sorts of other elements. So let’s take a look at the different ways to make smoking a safer experience for you and those around you.

Mental Health

Personally, I think this is one of the most important aspects of safe smoking. While some strains are fantastic for certain aspects of mental health, we can’t just assume you should smoke a lot if you have mental health issues. Especially if you have anxiety issues, paranoia, or any serious diagnosed disorders. For example, as a bipolar person, I have to be very careful about the strains I use. If I regularly smoke strong weed, anything that mood swings too much, or anything that can cause mild paranoia in others, it can really knock my brains out. Learning which strains work best with your brain is extremely important and if you start noticing signs like memory loss, severe lack of motivation, or a general increase in your paranoia, you should immediately cut back on your tobacco use and take a little research.

Respiratory problems

If you smoke your weed, you’re likely to have smoker’s cough as well as other mild respiratory issues. Obviously, there are several ways to reduce the damage to your lungs.

If you want to smoke your weed, maybe don’t mix it with tobacco. There will still be issues from the combustion of smoked cannabis, but it should be a little less damaging than smoking tobacco. You can also ensure that the stems and leaves are not attached to the herb you are smoking to create a smoother smoke.

They say holding the smoke in your lungs longer will mean you enjoy the high more, that’s nonsense. Don’t do that, all you’re really doing is making sure the fun little guys in your lungs pushing out the gross stuff are good and dead.

Make sure all your gear is nice and clean. If you use a bong or a pipe cleaner, it will make smoking a lot easier on your adorable little lungs.

Find other ways to consume cannabis, like edibles or even using a vape.

smoker’s cough

If you start adjusting your respiratory health, you could make the smoker’s cough worse as your lungs clear out the nonsense. There are several ways to reduce a smoker’s cough while your body is figuring things out.

Tea is a great option, just like when you’re not feeling well. Anything with ginger, honey, turmeric, or green tea is a great idea. Maybe honey and lemon with a little whiskey in it. Any of these will soothe your throat and reduce the pain of your cough.

Take a very hot bath or steam bath, maybe put a little peppermint oil in it to really clean it all up.

Do deep breathing exercises and stretches. Any type of exercise that encourages breathing is as good as running or aerobics. Perhaps end with some deep-breathing yoga. This should reduce the amount of cough you cough up and improve your overall lung health.

Reduce your high

It can be very bad for you if you get too high and don’t know how to get back down. We talked about it in a previous article, but a quick little tour can’t hurt. The main things people look for are peppercorns and citrus fruits. Chewing a peppercorn or nibbling on a lemon will wipe you out and there are certain compounds in lemons that are extremely calming when you’re too high.

Grounding techniques are great too, like dipping your hands in ice water or brewing a slow, concentrated cup of tea.

Common sense

Don’t buy weed from someone you don’t trust because you have no idea what’s in it. Of course, weed is unlikely to be mixed with anything, but still try to find a place to get your weed that you trust just to be safe.

Don’t buy weed illegally, especially not from some kind of sketchy street transfer where you risk getting caught. Obviously, don’t do it at all, it’s very mean, but be hypothetically reasonable.

Don’t drive high, I know it sounds obvious, but you’d be amazed. It’s ridiculous how many people I’ve known who drove completely stoned and often said things like “I’m actually more focused.” No you’re not, your reaction time is so slow, don’t do it.

Try to stay on top of how much you smoke. Most sources say not to smoke every day, but really, that’s up to you. I would just say that it’s probably a good idea to relax while smoking if you notice any harmful side effects or start to feel something you’re not used to.

Don’t smoke when you’ve had a lot to drink. Again, you’ll probably be fine, but you could also suddenly be ridiculously high and very likely to make you very sick. If you’re going for ham, probably choose one or the other.

Of course, this is all general advice and I trust you to be sensible babies. The bottom line is that you take care of yourself, do your research, try not to overindulge, and make sure your brain is nice and happy or at least not crashing.
