Psilocybin microdosing is all the rage right now, as more and more people are looking for ways to feel better without the ill effects of alcohol, prescription drugs, and their side effects.
A demographic group that is kiss psilocybin it’s moms. I can say that as a mother, I am exhausted, I have reached my limits and I never really get the rest I need. So I’m always looking for safe and effective ways to relieve stress.
I was really nervous about trying psilocybin, I’ve experienced it before and it was way too intense. However, I also know that dose is everything and I had taken quite a large dose. (Like stuffing a bag of dried mushrooms into a slurpee, yes that was as gross as it sounds).
As a mother, I seek a more refined experience that I can control. I want to make sure that if school calls and shit hits the fan, I’m still able to handle things.
“I’m noticing better emotional regulation – the little things don’t bother me as much as they used to, and I feel like my daily baseline is more stable, peaceful, and optimistic. I’m also getting a boost for myself. focus with psilocybin, but only if I’m consuming with the intention of focusing on work and going straight to it…in other words, I can also “focus” on things other than work, if it is there I put my attention”
Danielle is a trusting and respectful person, so when I started seeing moms like her microdosed mushrooms and talking about them openly, I decided to give it a try. Turns out it’s pretty awesome! Before we get into my experience, let’s look at some of the science behind psilocybin and why it’s so important.
The science of psilocybin
There’s a great documentary on Netflix called fantastic mushrooms and I highly recommend you look at this as an introduction to using psilocybin. The documentary is not just about psilocybin, it also talks about all mushrooms and how important they are to our ecosystem and what they can do for our health.
Research on psychedelics was halted for over 40 years due to prohibition. This means we missed important scientific discoveries about how psychedelics can benefit you. PTSDtreating substance abuse, severe depression and anxietyand new research shows that it can reduce your risk of heart disease and diabetes.
Research into how psilocybin can affect the brain shows us how it can heal our brain:
“…what happens to all of these neural connections is that some are prioritized and very efficient, like highways with lots of neural traffic, and others are twinned and rarely used, like dirt roads.” That’s where psilocybin can come in – it can essentially open up those dirt roads again and send a lot more traffic down them. –says Michael McGee, MD
Research is still new regarding psilocybin microdosing however, the research that does exist seems promising.
Is psylocybin safe?
Psilocybin is considered a safe substance. Psilocybin mushrooms have very low toxicity and require very large amounts to be dangerous or deadly. You would have to eat 3 pounds of dried mushrooms for a lethal dose.
Microdosing is very safe, for some people it may trigger anxiety, but there are no known serious side effects to report. Regular, long-term use of psilocybin for heart problems raises some concerns, but more research is needed.
There is also some concern about anyone with serious mental health issues with a history of psychosis, as the fear is that it could trigger a psychotic event in those who are susceptible to it.
It is not recommended to take a high dose of psilocybin without the help of a physician or other qualified professional to guide you through the process in a controlled setting.
How I felt after two weeks of microdosing mushrooms
At first I was really nervous, even though I had already drunk psilocybin, I didn’t know what to expect. I know cannabis dosage, side effects, and duration like the back of my hand, but mushrooms are a whole different ballgame.
The first few days, I took a dose of 100mg of psilocybin which is considered microdosing. It takes very small doses to achieve therapeutic effects without feeling intoxicated. In order to get high you would take between 1 and 4 grams depending on various factors (such as your weight and tolerance). I took high doses of psilocybin and thank you, I will pass this on for the foreseeable future.
I didn’t know how it would affect me so I waited to drop my kids off at school so I knew I would be alone for 6 hours until I had to pick them up.
I had no psychoactive effects. After about an hour I felt calmer and that was it. It was like someone turned down the background noise and I felt a little more peaceful. That’s all I felt, just a nice calm for hours and it was magical. I also used cannabis and that’s when things got more interesting.
Cannabis definitely enhances the psilocybin high, so use it with caution. I vaped THC at a lower temperature and did it earlier in the day, so I had plenty of time for the two to wear off before I had to pick up the kids from school.
Cannabis and psilocybin go great together if you’re looking to do nothing but be out all day. Do things like walk in a garden, take a bath, meditate, do yoga. Any peaceful, contemplative activity is amazing on both mushrooms and cannabis.
While out of the two I sat down to write this article, I filmed a video, did a photoshoot, and thought it was great for the art. I also had many technical difficulties and found that being on psilocybin helped me stay calm about it.
The psilocybin really slowed down time. It was noon and I thought I had to pick up the kids and realized I still had 2.5 hours left.
I just loved how the microdosing of psilocybin made me feel; calm, peaceful, carefree as we all seek to feel.
Getting the Most Benefits from Microdosing Mushrooms
You can develop a tolerance to psilocybin quickly and it is suggested to space out the doses so as not to diminish the effect.
There are several methods of microdosing psilocybin to get the most benefit from it. Danielle Simone Brand wrote an article for Double-blind magazine on the Stements Stack method. Statements of Paul is a prominent mycologist featured in the documentary Fantastic Fungi.
I asked Danielle what method she uses and this is what she said:
“I microdosed psilocybin every four days, after the Fadiman Protocol, for several months last year. Recently, I started using the Stamets stack and protocol, which involves microdosing psilocybin, lion’s mane, and niacin in a four-day program followed by three days off. I’ve been doing this for about 8 weeks”
What Psylocibin products I used
I started with a 100mg dose as I mentioned but increased it to 200mg and didn’t notice much difference as she felt the same. As for psilocybin dosage, I recommend starting at 50-100mg and seeing how that feels. Use more next time if you didn’t feel anything.
I used two products, one was the Enhance formula from Ultra Mystical and the other was the Anti-stress blend and the Mix of rest and relaxation through Osmosis. I liked the size of the capsules of Ultra Mystic, they were much easier to swallow than the large capsules of Osmosis
Overall I preferred the Osmosis mixtures like I felt more with them on the other brand. I recommend this brand if you want to try microdosing mushrooms, it’s a local brand from Vancouver BC.
Most of the women I’ve spoken to who microdose mushrooms grow them themselves. You can buy grow kits, there are several to choose from. I haven’t tried it because it’s too much work for me, but it’s worth mentioning that growing your own psilocybin is legal in Canada. So if you like farming, it’s worth a try!
Could psychedelics be the future of mental health?
I now understand why moms like to microdose mushrooms during the day, it’s almost better than cannabis because the effect is different, less in the head and more destabilizing. You feel calmer and I found that with a slightly higher dose it really helped with depression, especially the next day.
Then there’s the sex, I found sex on mushrooms to be deeply transformative as my husband and I spent more time during sex and felt a deeper connection with him. For this article, I had taken another brand and the side effects were unpleasant. It is really important that you get a good brand of psilocybin.
There are other psychedelics offered for microdosing, including LSD. I can’t see myself microdosing LSD at this point in my life, but I think there’s a lot of promise with psychedelics used in very low doses and how they can benefit our mental health in this crazy world.
I will be using psilocybin more often to make my day easier and recommend giving it a try. It is safe and effective and non-addictive. I also recommend trying a low dose rather than a microdose for when you won’t be bothered. Use this time to be present and cultivate a deeper connection with yourself and your partner.
