One of the newer cannabinoids that you can expect to see in products, especially vapes, is HHC-O Acetate. Let’s take a closer look at what it is, how it’s made, and where you can find it.

What is HHC-O? Synthetics and acetylation of cannabinoids

The definition of synthetic cannabinoids means one of two things. First, synthetic cannabinoids are compounds that do not exist in nature and must be created in the laboratory, like HHC-O. In addition, a synthetic can be a cannabinoid which Is it that exist in nature, but in such minimal amounts that in order to make enough for use in consumer products, it still has to be synthesized in the laboratory.

HHC-O belongs to the first category, while HHC belongs to the second. In cannabis plants, HHC is found in trace amounts in pollen. HHC-O is the acetate version of HHC. This is created through a process known as LTA decarboxylation. To understand what this means, let’s take a step back. We are all familiar with Delta 9 THC, the plant’s main psychoactive compound. Delta 9 THC is the result of light / heat induced decarboxylation of THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid). Likewise, THC-O is the result of the decarboxylation of delta 9 THC, however, this is done using a completely different method: the decarboxylation of LTA.

LTA decarboxylation uses a very toxic compound known as lead tetraacetate to promote oxidation and create oxidative decarboxylation, resulting in an acetate ester. The acetate ester is unnatural and can only be produced using some kind of chemical catalyst. As such, HHC-O-acetate is a synthetic analogue of HHC. While it is growing in popularity, especially in vape products, it is important to know that this is NOT a naturally occurring compound in cannabis, it is completely synthetic in every way.

All of this isn’t to say that synthetics are inherently bad. If safe and produced by a seasoned professional, they can be fun and definitely have their place in medicinal and recreational settings. But you definitely won’t get the same kind of high or experience with these products as you get with the real thing. If you know what to expect, you won’t be disappointed though.

A little more about HHC

HHC, or hexahydrocannabinol, is a psychoactive compound found in cannabis plants. Although it is still part of the marginal market, it has grown in popularity, when it comes to alternative cannabinoids. Regarding HHC research, it is almost non-existent. However, both natural and synthetic cannabinoids have been shown to suppress tumor growth in many different animal studies.

One study in particular looked at the angiogenic effects of several hexahydrocannabinol analogues to see how they can be used in cancer therapy. It was determined that HHC could block the growth of blood vessels that supply tumors, rather than block the growth of the tumor itself. So, it basically works as an angiogenesis inhibitor which starves tumors.

There is a naturally occurring, biologically active (-) – hexahydrocannabinol, as well as its synthetic enantiomer (+) – hexahydrocannabinol. Synthetic HHC, which can be found in spices, has the chemical formula: 9-Nor-9β-hydroxyhexahydrocannabinol, and the naturally occurring variety, found in trace amounts in cannabis pollen, has the formula: 6aR, 9R, 10aR- Hexahydrocannabinol.

As the name suggests (Hexahydrocannabinol vs Tetrahydrocannabinol), HHC has many similarities to THC. This is basically a simplified version of the Delta 9 THC. HHC and THC both have very similar molecular structures and comparable effects. With HHC, all double bonds were broken and replaced with hydrogen (AKA hydrogenation). It was discovered during research in the 1960s and 1970s where the goal was to find the most basic cannabinoid-like substances that could still bind to CB receptors.

What about the new HHC-O vapes?

Currently, few retailers still sell HHC-O. In fact, I have only been able to find three so far. All three provide descriptions of similar products, claiming that it is “up to 1.5 times more potent than HHC” and that it “has a very low viscosity which makes it almost liquid at room temperature, creating a amazing vaping experience “.

HHC is often described as a sensation similar to Delta 9 THC, with “sativa” effects. Personally I have found it to be a slightly lighter version of Delta 9, but I am a regular user of cannabis with a very high tolerance so your experience may vary. Considering the effects of HHC, coupled with claims by retailers that the acetate version is 1.5 times more potent, one can make a reasonable guess as to how HHC-O can affect them,

That said, as we always love to bring you all the latest products at the best possible prices, we have a few deals on HHC-O vapes available in our. WEEKLY THC bulletin; if you are interested in trying this compound for yourself. I’m a cannabis purist, but I can certainly appreciate the convenience and discretion of the alt. Cannabinoids and vaping products – especially now that I live in a state of ban.
