Location: In the Jordaan district, Oude Leliestraat 2
Did you know weed isn’t really legal in Amsterdam? It’s true, coffeeshops are allowed to sell it, but it’s not entirely legal, it falls into a gray area of the law. This is where this famous coffeeshop got its name. Just like AMS, Gray area has been around for 25 years!
Here are our top three reasons why you should visit Gray Area on your next visit to Amsterdam:
- First of all, the grass is fantastic and STRONG.
- The budtenders are friendly and really competent.
- The location is fantastic.
Interior and exterior walls are covered in graffiti and stickers. But make no mistake, this place has some of the best strains in town, some of which have actually won multiple cannabis awards!
All your favorite smoking musicians have been here, from Snoop to Willie Nelson, from Phish to Cypress Hill…and don’t forget Killer Mike, who is enjoying a “little” bag of weed in the photo below. That alone should tell you they have some amazing buds.
This is the part where we suggest our favorite strains, but honestly at Gray Area they are all excellent. You can see the latest buds menu here.
The only “bad” thing we have to say about this coffeeshop is that we wish it was bigger! But don’t worry, just avoid peak times and you should be able to get a table, or at least not have to wait in line!
Explore the region
Now that you’ve visited Gray Area, it’s time to explore one of Amsterdam’s most iconic neighborhoods. What was once a mostly blue-collar, poorer neighborhood is now one of the trendiest and most desirable in the city!
The Jordaan has a lot to offer. We would be remiss not to mention the Anne Frank House. It will certainly be an unforgettable experience. Our only advice is to book well in advance. If you can’t get tickets, you can always go see it from outside – it’s just around the corner.
Now let’s move on to other weed-friendly activities. Let’s start with what is arguably the absolute best cookie in the world.
Van Stapele Koekmakerij
Every day you might see an hour signal of people queuing to visit this Koekmakerij (cookie factory). They only make one type of cookie…after all, if it’s the best in the world, why bother with anything else, right? Their famous cookie is made with dark chocolate and a melty white chocolate filling. Perfection. Again, you’ll want to avoid peak times unless you’re okay with queuing.
Tony’s Chocolonely Superstore
While we’re talking chocolate, you won’t want to miss the Chocolonely Superstore. This one is not in the Jordaan, but a short walk from the Gray Area. You may have eaten Chocolonely chocolate before. It’s lekker (tasty). Everything is fair trade. And in this place, it’s really fun! You’ll feel like you’re in Willy Wonka’s factory. Not only will you be able to try any of their flavors, but in this store you can even create your own, with the ingredients of your choice, and it will be ready in minutes!
More cravings? No problem!
Finally, you’ll want to check out that local favorite, the Banketbakkerij Van Der Linde.
They only have one flavor, but that’s all you need. It’s like mascarpone and whipped cream had a baby. You don’t want to miss this lekker treat!
Time to play!
Last but not least, a few steps away is the Lego Store. If you’re a stoner, chances are you love Legos.
At the flagship store, you can see Lego windmills and a trippy Lego rendition of Dutch artist MC Escher’s famous Stairs of Relativity.
