There are loads and loads of different CBD products on the market today, as we all know. They all come from the same plant, and so the only real difference is how they are extracted from the plant. There are many ways to turn a plant into a usable medicine, and today we are going to discuss one of the oldest and most effective methods: making a tincture.
What is a tincture?
Word “dyeingis an old term for an alcohol-based plant extract. It is made by soaking the plant in a solution of alcohol and water, which causes the chemical components of the plant to be extracted, where they remain in solution. The result is an alcoholic liquid infused with the medicinal benefits of a particular plant. Needless to say, you can only use grain (ethyl) alcohol for something like this, as most other alcohols are not safe to drink. Technically, your car’s antifreeze is a type of alcohol, but you definitely don’t want to use something like that!
People realized early on that you could infuse alcoholic beverages with the benefits of medicinal herbs. As humans have been brewing alcohol since the dawn of recorded history, the practice of making tinctures may be just as ancient. The Sumerians considered beer a “gift from the gods”, and this might have been one of the reasons for this saying.
Benefits of using a tincture
Although CBD tinctures from Stirlingcbdoilsare not as popular as oils, they are more suitable for certain purposes. In the end, it all comes down to what you do and how you approach the process. For example, tinctures are really good for sublingual (under the tongue) use. They burn a little, but it doesn’t last very long. This method of use offers a very high level of bioavailability, which is a fancy way of saying that your body will use more CBD. This happens because you bypass the digestive system and go straight into the blood.
Tinctures are very strong, as the alcohols do a good job of concentrating the “essence” of the plant. There is a very simple reason for this fact, which is obvious if you think about the whole thing. Alcohols are known for their ability to dissolve oily and greasy substances, whereas water generally does not affect these things. Since many of the essential compounds in herbal medicines are oils of one type or another, they will easily dissolve in any type of alcohol. When making a tincture, you use a 50/50 mixture of water and alcohol, which also allows it to get the water-soluble compounds.
Tinctures also have the advantage of being digested very quickly. Alcohol tends to enter the bloodstream and digestive system very quickly, as anyone who’s ever had a glass of whiskey can attest. Thus, a tincture is a very fast-acting drug. Because alcohol doesn’t break down (in fact, it prevents rot), it is also a medicine that has an extremely long shelf life. Oils cannot be stored for too long or they will start to mold. Dyes, on the other hand, will last until they have been used or evaporated.
Finally, there is an added benefit that comes from using tinctures. These types of CBD preparations are much better for those who prefer to mix it with a drink. CBD oils don’t really mix with liquids (for obvious reasons), so tinctures present a good alternative here.
How to make a CBD tincture
If you want to try your hand at making your own DIY-CBD tincture, it’s not that hard to do. Of course, you will need some hemp flowers. In fact, you’ll need quite a few, depending on the size of the batch you want to craft. The first thing you will need is a tightly closed glass jar. it can be almost any size, but be aware that your container size should match your batch size. Thus, big pots can only be used for big prizes, and vice versa.
Fill the jar halfway with hemp flowers, then fill the rest of the jar with a mixture of alcohol and water, which should be 50/50. Now, as to how you will get this solution, there are two ways you can do it. First, you can buy pure grain alcohol and mix it with an equal volume of water. Or, you can just go the easier route and buy 100 degree clear vodka. In fact, any 100 degree clear liquor would probably work.
Now all you have to do is close the jar tightly (making sure it’s airtight) and shake it. You will need to shake the jar twice a day (once in the morning and once in the evening). If you don’t, the plant matter floating at the top will grow mold and your tincture will be ruined. After two weeks, strain the plant material through three coffee filters and your tincture will be ready to use.
We’ve tried to give you a good overview of this topic here, and that’s why we’ve included detailed instructions on how to make your own tincture. Of course, not everyone will choose to do this, but it will help you better understand what tinctures are and how they work. If you liked this article, do not hesitate to come back and see us.
